Busy busy busy

September 30th, 2006 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

A busy day allround today which kicked off early with a visit to DDWT Junior’s Nana and Grampa. Having left there - complete with some toy cars - as is the norm, we headed home for some lunch.

Our next stop was the Liberty stadium for some tickets for the Swans v Rovers of Tranmere and some Ospreys v Australia tickets. Both a quite special as they will be Mrs DDWT’s first visit to the stadium for both a football and rugby match.

After that we headed into town and straight to the Early Learning Centre to pick up DDWT Junior’s ‘Brachiosaurus’ dinosaur (below) - something which in fairness we’ve been promising him for weeks (and he’s been nagging for for weeks as well!).

Last but certainly not least we ventured around the latter stages of the BikeWales West silver route - just for me to mentally prepare myself for what lay ahead tomorrow. It came as a bit of a shock to me to find at least 3 major climbs, which having already done about 30 miles before I get to them is going to be hard work and I know it’s going to hurt.

Oh well I suppose I’d better get myself off to bed in readiness for tomorrow - wish me luck, ‘cos I think I’m going to need it.

Final preparation

September 29th, 2006 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

Well today was our final bike ride prior to Sunday, so a gentle 10 and a half mile run down to Forte’s ice cream parlour and back was our final bit of preparation. We’ve averaged 14.2 mph, so it was a steady pace but even more importantly it had the desired effect in that our our legs felt ‘loose’ and supple.

My box of High Five bars and energy drink duly arrived from Wiggle, so I’ve even got the nutritional aspect of the 52 mile ride covered - hopefully. It’s been quite noticeable (not just from writing my blog) how much emphasis I have placed on Sunday’s bike ride during the last few weeks, perhaps overly so.

Anyway I have my objectives in mind - (a) to finish the race (b) to do it in under 4 hours and (c) to try and be within 10 minutes of my training partner (who is a more experienced road racer than I). We’re both very competitive, so it’ll no doubt make for an interesting morning.

Bemused in Betws

September 28th, 2006 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

A most bizarre day having spent some 2 hours (over lunch) driving around the BikeWales West Silver route and getting lost on Betws mountain. Our intention was to get a mental picture of the 52 mile course - instead all we got was lost and frustrated at the baffling (and mis-leading) route plan (as provided by the race organisers).

In fact - and I’m embaressed to say this - we only got half way around the route before we had to come back for work (or risk a ‘core time violation’). So if it takes us that long in a BMW Compact 318 then gawd help me on my trusty old Specialized HardRock mountain bike on Sunday.

As I love my food so much (despite my weight watching tendancies), Mrs DDWT made a cracking homemade beef curry tonight. I honestly can’t remember the last time I had a beef curry (I’m usually a korma or tikka masala man) - it must be years.

Off to bed early tonight in preparation for Sunday, as the way I feel at the moment I need all the rest I can get. Especially having now seen the monumental 5 mile climb up Betws mountain that awaits me on Sunday morning!

Take it easy

September 27th, 2006 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

Biking was high on the agenda once again today (I’m not obsessed honest) with a 20 mile ‘take it easy’ ride down to Gowerton, Dunvant and Mumbles. It was a preparation ride in readiness for the big one on Sunday and it proved very worthwhile.

It also gave me the opportunity to try out some nutritional supplements for the race, such as the very nice (and chocolate coated) High Five Sports bar. These high carbohydrate bars are meant to provide a long lasting energy source and therefore is ideal for long bike races. I have to say it seemed to do the trick for me today - so I’ll be munching a few of them come Sunday!

Talking of Sunday and the BikeWales West ride, my race pack finally came through today - much to my relief! The pack came complete with micro-chip timing device and my race number - so if you are out and about on the race route on Sunday, do please offer your support to me and all of the other riders.

Swans v Railwaymen

September 26th, 2006 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

The Swans entertained the Railwaymen of Crewe at the Liberty tonight and I made certain that I wasn’t going to miss this game - especially as it was being billed as a ‘make or break’ game for Kenny Jackett.

I obviously can’t comment on Saturday as I wasn’t there, but tonights performance was a lot lot better and perhaps more importantly saw the Swans return to playing football not hoofball as they have been of late.

Some 5 changes were made - perhaps the biggest one being Willy Gueret being dropped in favour of Andy Oakes, but for most of us fans this was long overdue anyway. The Swans controlled the game from the start and really should have won by more than the 2-1 scoreline suggested. Goals from the recalled Rory Fallon and Leon Knight, either side of the Crewe penalty were enough to see the Swans home - much to the relief of the 10,031 present.

My man of the match was Darren Way, whom having had a torrid start to his Swans career certainly showed he has a lot to offer with a gutsy and energetic marauding display in the midfield engine room. Little Leon Britton was also a handful. For the first time in quite a few games, I left the stadium a happy bunny and it certainly helped raise my spirits. You can read a full match report on the Swans official website.

As Tuesday’s are not mother & toddler group day for DDWT Junior, he spent the best part of the morning painting and generally making a mess as only 2 and a half year olds can do.

I’m sure he won’t thank me in years to come for sharing his artisitc efforts with you! Having said that, you never know he might become a well known artist.

Not far enough

September 25th, 2006 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

After the weekend I’ve just had enjoying myself, it was time to get back to business today. Upon getting to work I found out that my training partner had done a 40 mile ride yesterday - this made me even more determined to get my backside into gear.

So my lunchtime ride today took me to Gowerton and back, which is about a 14 mile ride. It was a good ride and I felt a lot happier than I did after last Thursday’s little jaunt. Pyschologically however, I’d been dealt a blow in knowing that my companion for Sunday’s BikeWales race had done such a long ride (whereas I hadn’t).

The official photos from the Belfast dinner also surfaced today and unfortunately, the nearest we got to being in them was being in the background of some of them! Anyway, for those interested you can see then here on Harrison’s photography site (the official photographer).

Grumpy with capital G

September 24th, 2006 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

After being in bed since around 8pm last night I’m back in the land of the living today. Mrs DDWT was pleased as my attention and concentration span had increased tenfold overnight!!

Not such good news on the weighing front though. 16st 12lbs was the tale of the scale today and somehow I’ve managed to GAIN 3lbs in a week - quite a remarkable achievement considering how much biking I’ve done. Maybe the wine from Belfast has taken more of a toll on me than I think or the weighing scales are having a touch of paranoia.

Very disappointed and grumpy now because of it! As a result (and still being tired) we didn’t do jack squat all day, so it was wasted really - which makes me even more grumpy as I hate wasting time doing nothing (as that isn’t my idea of relaxing IYSWIM).

We had a great ‘crack’

September 23rd, 2006 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

Phew what a hectic 24 hours has just passed by. Since leaving Swansea at noon yesterday, we’ve driven to Bristol, flown to Belfast, gone to a gala dinner awards ceremony, slept (very little), flown back to Bristol and arrived back in Swansea at 14:50. Talk about a whistle stop tour!

There is so much to tell about the trip that I really don’t know where to start. I think I’ll start at Bristol airport where we had to keep ourselves busy after finding out that our Flybe flight was delayed by an hour or so. Ok, first up… I got stopped at security and had my Lynx Click deodorant confiscated by the rather aged female security guard (your typical ’saga lout’ type) - basically because it could have contained some bomb making mixture. Whilst I wasn’t amused at the time, I was grateful that at least they do carry out such checks these days. Either way, I certainly wasn’t having the ‘Lynx effect‘ on the security guard!

After this minor setup, it was time for the gang to try and teach me shorthand in 30 minutes - needless to say I didn’t get as far as writing ‘apple’ let alone anything resembling a sentence. Now this could be attributed to the fact that I was by now drinking some strongbow (served by an entirely Polish speaking bar team I hasten to add) or my tutors were having a laugh - at my expense.

Time soon passed and we were on our way to Belfast. The talk of the 1 hour and 15 minute flight was (a) why was the plane rattling so much and (b) the sub-standard “trolley-dolly” on offer (although the fella’s agreed to disagree on the latter). Anyway, we arrived in Belfast and we promptly driven to the Travelodge (you can’t beat staying in style can you LOL) by Mick - well I think his name was Michael, but we’d decided to call all the fella’s from Belfast Mick to make it easier. No offence intended to any Michael’s or Mick’s reading this and no I’m not taking the Michael either.

A quick shower, shave and toilet visit and we were back down in reception by 6:45 ready for partytime at 7pm in Belfast City Hall. What a night ensued - plenty of wine, food (especially the fillet steak - which incidently was the BEST I have EVER eaten, well what I can remember eating anyway) and song/dance. The helium filled balloons are also worth a mention, if only for the number of Welsh speaking Mickey Mouses we met on our table (i.e. us lot!). Despite not winning any awards (which was very disappointing) we certainly made our presence felt and showed everyone how to party (and embaress yourself at the same time).

With shutdown coming at 1am in the morning, it was time to venture to a nightclub in search of more tunes to bop along to. Everyone recommended either Thomsons (sp?) or Milk, we didn’t care which one we hit until one of the security guards on duty politely (but firmly) recommended that we didn’t venture to either. We heeded his advice and opted to go back to the Europa hotel - which was where most of the people at the dinner were staying.

Whilst in the hotel we hooked up with an Irish TV crew who were doing a film based on the Gaelic language and in particular Galway Gaelic. A very interesting conversation ensued around the Welsh and Gaelic languages and their similarities. We also touched on the somewhat more thorny issue of the Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland - which was very enlightening, especially hearing it from the horses mouth as it were (rather than the media portrayal of life in Northern Ireland).

Anyway, we finally left the hotel around 6:30am (having learned a great deal and drank lots of vodka and cranberry juice!), went back to the Travelodge for a few hours kip before having breakfast at around 9am. Mick picked us up a wee bit later and before we knew it we were back in the departure lounge ready to fly home. I took this opportunity to get a few small gifts for DDWT Junior - a rather large pencil (complete with a sheep chewing on a clover) and a little leprechaun - now christened ‘Mick’ you’ll be surprised to hear.

We were soon on the plane - a more sturdy one this time around - and back in Bristol by 1pm. The team were totally tired out (or hungover as was the case with some) and ready for some serious sleeping! We duly arrived back in Swansea around 2:50pm feeling very weary but having enjoyed a good ‘crack’ (as they say in Belfast).

The Swans were playing the Terriers of Huddersfield today and I was mightily relieved to have given my Dad my ticket for the game as I didn’t think I’d be back in time. It would have been a close shave and the way I feel I’m glad I did.

I feel even more justified now as they lost 2-1 and played the worst they have all season!

Belfast beckons

September 22nd, 2006 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

Am off to Belfast today for an awards dinner with the Chartered Institute of Public Relations. I’ve been nominated for an award (as part of a team) for the use of e-media in Local Government.

We’re flying over from Bristol with Flybe.com so it’ll make for an interesting journey I’m sure - especially given the security procedures in place nowadays - and seeing as I haven’t set a foot on a plane in 6 years!

I’ll give a full lowdown on my first visit to Belfast tomorrow - hopefully with a few pictures as well.

Gordon the sandblaster

September 21st, 2006 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

The 19 mile bike ride today was one of the most uncomfortable and downright knackering I have ever had the misfortune of doing. The wind was more like a gale and it made the journey along Swansea Bay, Bracelet Bay, Caswell, Langland, Murton, Fairwood Common, Killay, Derwen Fawr and then back along Swansea Bay again absolute murder - for the whole 1 hour 26 minutes duration!

Coming back the wind was so strong that it was blowing the sand off the beach right at us - for the only time in my life I knew how it felt to be sandblasted! The back end of Hurricane Gordon certainly has a lot to answer for.
