12 week scan

November 29th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Family

Plenty of excitement and nervous energy in the house of DDWT today, as Mrs DDWT went for her first baby scan at Morriston hospital. Even though this is our 2nd baby, it is still an amazing experience seeing our wonderful little creation moving its tiny arms and legs about - almost as if in protest against the momentary intrusion.

We were amazed how clear the scan actually was, especially when we recalled how DDWT Junior was during his first scan. It’s such a shame really that now they only produce photographic scans to buy for the 20 week scan - as it would have been a real treat to see today’s scan in print.

Most importantly however, everything seemed in order and we feel happy that we’ve been able ’see’ our wonderful creation for the first time. It’s a relief to actually now have something almost tangeable - if you see what I mean.

It’s also perhaps somewhat iconic that the baby’s scheduled due date is June 10th 2008 - our wedding anniversary!!

Vote for Sustrans’ Connect2

November 28th, 2007 | 3 Comments | Posted in Cycling, Family, Media

Calling all cyclists - don’t forget to vote for Sustrans’ Connect2 in the People’s £50 Million Lottery Giveaway.

Connect2 is a UK-wide project that aims to improve local travel in 79 communities by creating new walking and cycling routes for those everyday journeys. In terms of south west Wales, this would mean valuable funding for improving the cycle link at Afon Tawe bridge, Clydach and Gowerton, Penclawdd and Crofty. There are many similar projects throughout Wales.

So PLEASE vote now and help improve the already amazing cycle paths and routes in Wales.

I had a pleasant surprise today to see that this very blog had been given a mention on the British Heart Foundation blog - as a result of my ramblings about the Swansea Santa jog.

You can read the article for yourself here, but better still why not take part in one of the many BHF events and raise some money for a worthy cause.

I’m glad to report that DDWT Junior returned to school today and although he’s not back to his normal 100% self - he asked to go himself! It does seem however that lots of his classmates are suffering with similar illnesses as the class number has dwindled to less than 10 this week.

We took the opportunity this morning to see how tall the little fella is now as well - partly because he also seems to be displayed the classic symptoms of growing pains. Anyway he now stands at 107.5 cm or 3ft 6′ - which seems to me to be quite tall for someone who is 46 months old. But what do I know.

Swansea v Hartlepool United

November 27th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Food, Football

We are top of the league say we are top of the league! A 1 nil win for the Swans tonight against a useful monkey hangers outfit - but in all honesty we rode our luck (’pools hit the crossbar twice) and were lucky to get the 3 points in the end. So Angel Rangel take a bow son, your goal was a cracker!
Whilst I’ll savour the moment of being top of the table, it doesn’t disguise the fact that once again we struggled to break down a well organised and physical team. It was without a doubt a frustrating night with only glimpses of the free-flowing passing game the Swans can play. I still can’t get my head around the 4-5-1 formation either, especially at home.

I won’t bother commenting much about the game itself - I’ll let you read the media reports for that, but here are a few choice comments about all and sundry:

1. I still can’t figure out why a 5o odd year old man - a complete stranger I hasten to add - wanted to show me his adult porn collection on his mobile phone pre-match?!!?!?
2. Andy Robinson is unfit, lazy and even uninterested. January transfer window anyone?
3. Dorus, Chuckles, Painter, Anderson and Bodde were the stars this evening.
4. Jason Scotland is NOT a target man, please don’t try to make him one.
5. The boo-boys have seemingly left the asbo east stand - thankfully.

So roll on Friday and the luxury of seeing the Swans live on Sky Sports against Horsham in the FA Cup 2nd Round.

Earlier in the day, I was invited out to lunch with my old working buddies from work to celebrate a birthday. The venue was the Anarkali in St. Helen’s road, which is rumoured to be the first tandoori restaurant in South West Wales since 1978! Well however long it’s been there, its reputation seems well earned as the food was delicious.

Despite arriving before the chef and having to wait nigh on 30 odd minutes for food - after munching some delicious poppadoms - it was well worth it. My chicken korma, chips and keema nan were spot on and all for the bargain price of about £9. I will definitely be going back there sometime soon!

Throat and ear infection

November 26th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Cycling, Family, Life

For the 2nd time in as many weeks DDWT Junior had to miss his appointment for his MMR jabs due to having a throat and ear infection. It also meant he wasn’t in school - along with a lot of other children from what we understand, who are all suffering from one ailment or another (predominately colds). Hopefully the antibiotics that have been prescribed will do the trick and he can get around to having the jabs sometime soon.

Hot of the heels of yesterday’s Santa jog, I took to the road on my mountain bike today and headed off down to Bracelet Bay and Swansea Marina for a 13.08 mile spin. The ride lasted 52 minutes 9 seconds at an average of 15 mph and a top speed of 22mph. The conditions were ok on the whole apart from the patchy drizzly rain - although the biggest difficulty (obstacle?) I encountered was that of pedestrains. Why do they always seem to veer towards the direction and line you are taking - even when walking towards you in some cases! It’s been a while since the last ‘issue’ with people walking, but today could have seen at least 2 nasty collisions due to people being unaware of what is going around them.

With Christmas shopping in full flow for most people it seems, I was rather bemused to see a large billboard poster on one of the side streets off Pentrechwyth Road in St. Thomas (Swansea) featuring a huge advert for the St. Davids shopping centre….. in Cardiff! I understand why it’s there - an attempt to draw shoppers away from Swansea no doubt - but I’m surprised that the various retail business groups in Swansea aren’t up in arms about it. Maybe they haven’t seen it yet? Perhaps I’ll tip the South Wales Evening Post off about it :)

BHF Swansea Santa Jog 2007

November 25th, 2007 | 1 Comment | Posted in Family, Running

Today saw the inaugural British Heart Foundation Swansea Santa Jog and I was there (despite forgetting to give in my registration card before the start!).
It was great being involved, not only because it was for a good cause, but because it was great fun as well. Over 500 Santa’s took part from all age groups - there were even pushchairs and some dogs (complete with tinsel trimmings!) taking part.

DDWT Junior certainly enjoyed himself as did most of the other children present no doubt. Although I did have to explain that the “real” Santa wasn’t there and that we were only helping him by raising money for charity. Having said that, after weighing myself this morning - 17 st 1lb shock horror - I felt more like the real Santa to be honest!

Anyway, the following video will give you an idea of the fun that was had and the sight of 500 Santa’s going for a run, jog or walk!

The Evening Post photographers were out in force, so I’m sure there’ll be loads of pictures on their site in a couple of days.

As for the run itself, I opted to do just that (rather than walk) and the 2K course around Swansea Marina took me 9 minutes 38 seconds - not quick I know, but being kitted out as a Santa certainly made me sweat!

After the morning’s excitement, we headed off over to Debenhams for lunch. Nice though the food was, I thought £16.95 was pricey for two adults and a children’s meal - still we needed some tucker so we weren’t that bothered.

However, on trying to depart the store - we got stuck in the lift (just the 3 of us) for over 10 minutes. Thankfully the store staff were quick to respond and despite being stuck between 2 floors, they dealt with the situation very well and had medics on hand should the need arise. We managed to keep DDWT Junior distracted long enough for him to think nothing was wrong, but the whole incident made us wary of using any other lifts. After this little incident, we decided to head off home and call it a day in Swansea.

Chilling out

November 24th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Family

With it being a typical winter’s day outside, the house of DDWT decided it was going to be a PJ day (which means lounging around all day in pyjamas and doing nowt!). Not very energetic or interesting I know, but relaxing nevertheless.

So apart from Mrs DDWT venturing out to Pizza Hut to get some 2 stuffed crust pizza’s we’ve basically spent the day mucking around on the laptop and PS2, building lego animals, setting up DDWT Junior’s Thomas the Tank engine track (again) and watching Wales v South Africa (but wish we hadn’t).

Talking of the laptop, if you’re looking for some free online games to play with your kids (ranging from platform games to colouring games) then take a look at the Kaboose site which I found today - which featured loads of games, including dinosaur ones (DDWT Junior’s favourite!).

After this we’ll probably sit down and watch some more TV in the form of I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here and other nonsense no doubt. It’s the ideal preparation I reckon for the Swansea Santa job tomorrow - especially as I still have a dodgy knee :(
