Fresh vegetables

December 24th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Food, Football, Shopping

I’ve just returned from Asda’s in Morriston, having stocked up on fresh vegetables for Christmas day - and I can only describe it as a bizarre and crazy hour or so!

Given the siege mentality that appears to grip the nation on Christmas Eve - especially in respect of carrots, swedes, bread, milk, etc, I’d decided a dew days back that I’d hit the local 24 hour stores in the wee hours rather than early morning. As it was a Sunday, the stores were in the bizarre position of closing at 4pm and then re-opening at a minute past midnight.

So I duly arrived (safely) at Asda’s about 10 minutes past midnight, having encountered several boy racers/drunken drivers along the way and by that I mean the type who overtake you near a bend and around the road bollards.

I was shocked. Not only was it really busy, but they hadn’t re-stocked the bloody shelves! What’s the point in opening “early” if most of the fresh produce isn’t due “until the middle of the night” - as one of the shop assistants told me.

Anyway, there was just about enough fresh veg left for me to get what I needed, but I wasn’t impressed. Next year I think I’ll wait until the morning rush as I doubt it’ll be that much busier and the choice will be better.

I suppose the only positive was that I bumped into Swansea City’s very own Mr Versatile - Alan Tate - whilst in the store and stopped to have a chat with him, or rather he was complaining to me that his mrs had written the list and he didn’t know where everything was! Still it was nice to chat to him and it was refreshing to see how down to earth he was. Nice one beaker!

Marks and Spencers Sale Preview

December 23rd, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Sales, Shopping, Vouchers

Anyone regular M&S shoppers will know that the Marks and Spencers online sale is ALWAYS excellent - with an abundance of bargains to be had. I suppose the only downside is that it starts on Christmas Day - which obviously can make things a wee bit difficult.

Still being a dab hand at this now for over 3 years I’ll share some tips with you to make it a lot easier :)

1. Make list of the items you want before you visit the Marks and Spencer website (taking note of the product codes - the Txxx xxx numbers).

2. The Marks and Spencers Online sale starts usually around 6am on Christmas Day - so don’t bother waiting up until gone midnight, it isn’t worth it!

3. Use the FREE Delivery codes available to you:

FREEDELV‘ is standard free delivery when you spend over £30 on the M&S website
FREENDAY‘ is free nominated delivery day when you spend over £150 on the M&S website

Ok, last but certainly not least… the following link will take you to the Marks and Spencers Sale pages, which are NOT SHOWN on the main Marks and Spencers website YET.

All of these items will be in the M&S sale and the sale prices for each of them will ONLY be displayed when the sale starts - but at least you will know WHAT is going to be on sale. You never know M&S might put the sales prices on before the sale goes live (it’s happened in the past) - so you’ll be able to beat the rush!

Enjoy yourselves - I usually do :)

Trolley dash

December 21st, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Family, Health, Life, Photography, Shopping

Phew, what a manic day it’s been from start to finish and some start to my holiday period!

Our pre-planned early Christmas food shop at Asda didn’t materialise until noon - which in retrospect was a bad move. I think I’ve finally witnessed the spectacle that is ‘trolley rage’. I’ve never quite seen anything like it, although I perhaps shouldn’t be too surprised, as after all us Brits (well some of us) have a siege mentality when it comes to any major bank holiday. We managed to keep our calm - unlike some people - but with DDWT Junior is tow is was tested somewhat believe me! Talk about the trolley going one way and us the other.

After lunch, it was time for me to head off up to Morriston hospital to pick up my Dad - fresh from a double hernia operation. In his true unique style who tried to milk the sympathy for as much as it was worth (he’s teribble like that) but my Mam and I were having none of it. Having had several major operations between us, my Dad’s moans and groans about needles, etc were somewhat hard to sympathise with. A hard nose approach to take I know, but you really don’t know my Dad.

Early evening saw the house of DDWT head off to the Waterfront Winterland in Swansea for some fun and relief after the hectic day we’d had so far.

As you can imagine DDWT Junior was majorly excited by the bright lights and numerous rides available. A couple of points worth mentioning which almost immediately came to our attention - ALL of the rides operate a token system (starting from 3 tokens per ride minimum). Each token costs you 50p and can be bought from the numerous token booths dotted around. In essence, what this really means is that each ride in effect costs £1.50 - except the Giant Wheel which is basically £3 for adults and kids (depending on their height!). The other thing worth noting is that pretty much all of the ride operators are Polish!

Anyway, after DDWT Junior sampling Claudia the yellow bus and hot air balloon rides, we were amazed to hear that he wanted to go on the Giant Wheel! With Mrs DDWT being pregnant and scared stiff of heights, I had the pleasure of going on the ride as well. The ride in fairness was worth every penny and the views (despite it being around 17:30 and pitch dark) were quite amazing - especially with the City, Marina and surrounding areas lit up. What was even better was that you could turn each ‘cage’ around using the inner steering wheel - thus allowing you to choose you view. Anyway, both of us loved it and I must confess a visit in broad daylight is on the cards :)

Next it was the turn of the caterpillar rollercoaster and although DDWT Junior was under the required height, he was allowed on provided someone accompanied him. We were even more surprised as he loved this ride more than any of the others and even managed the odd ‘whoop’ and ‘woooahhh’ - complete with arms in the air!! One is for sure, he’s far more daring that either I or the Mrs were at his age.

With our token money almost spent and the temperature dropping rapidly, our port of call was Santa’s grotto. Unfortunately, despite his obvious excitement about seeing the main man whilst we were in the queue, when we actually got inside the grotto it was a major case of the tears I’m afraid and a dash for the exit door.

It was a disappointing end to the evening, but reminded the Mrs and I of when we did exactly the same when we were little ones. By now it was time to trundle off home as we were all beginning to flag. I did however stop briefly to take a few motion blur snaps - such as the one below.

All wrapped up

December 18th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Life

Aaaah, what a lovely feeling it is to sit here typing, safe in the knowledge that not only have I finished my Christmas shopping, but I’ve just finished wrapping them all as well *big grin*

Many many moons ago I was one of those stereotype typical fellas who would leave my Christmas shopping until Christmas eve, as if somehow thriving or even perversely enjoying the crazy hustle and bustle of trying to get the job done by 7pm - so that I could ‘hit the town’ for a festive beer. Gawd I’m so glad those days are waaaaaaay behind me now, preferring to take pleasure in seeing everyone else marauding around like lunatics trying to get ‘the’ gift for whomever (which usually ends up being the wrong size/colour and upsetting her indoors).

Storytime

December 17th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Cycling, Family, Work

Going back to work after a weekend off is usually a rather mundane and somewhat depressing affair, this wasn’t the case today however.

With THE party having passed everyone by on Friday, it was storytime today with everything catching up on the gossip from what is always an eventful afternoon/evening. It also made me realise that I more than lived up to my nickname of ’snakehips’, as apparently I was shakin’ my ass to most of the discs being spun :)

Mind you that’s quite tame to some of the reports of heard of other peoples antics *blush*

It was nice to take DDWT Junior to school again - as per Friday - and even more of a delight to see all of the things he’s made this term. From tree decorations to candles, chocolate to cards, each one was fantastic and a treat to see. It made us proud to be his Mam and Dad and it was a real treat to see his little face light up with excitement when showing us his work. It’s hard to believe that he’ll be 4 in January - where have the past 3 years gone?

Rather than do a training session at lunchtime today, I opted to ride my bike back home in readiness for the impending Christmas break. I swear the 9.21 mile ride was one of the coldest I’ve had this year as the bracing northerly wind made the temperature indeed feel like the -7 wind chill forecast. My journey took me 45 minutes and 28 seconds with a top speed of 19.6 mph.

I think I’ve only just thawed out!

Christmas party #2

December 14th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Cycling, Social

I warmed up - if that’s what you can call it - for my 2nd Christmas party by going for a 17.38 mile bike ride this lunchtime.

On top of my usual Gowerton trip I also took a detour down Mumbles as well, just to bump them miles up a bit. The vital statistics of my spin were a top speed of 21.5 mph and a total time of 1 hour 10 minutes and 12 seconds. It was bitterly cold and I’m already regretting the decision not to bring a ‘going out’ coat with me for later DOH.

We’re due to go for a drink at around 4pm before heading off to the MAIN party later.

More later - maybe ;)

First Nativity play

December 12th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Family, Work

It was with great disappointment that I had to miss DDWT Junior’s very first school nativity play today - due to it clashing with an immovable meeting in work. If that wasn’t bad enough, my misery was compounded by the fact that there was a poor turnout for the meeting anyway. I was tinged with both sadness and anger as you can imagine.

Fortunately, Mrs DDWT was able to film the play - which obviously wasn’t as good as being there, but came a close second. It was great to see his beaming little face in the class of children and him kitted out in his shepard’s outfit (i.e. dressing gown with tea towel!) whilst singing lots of songs. We did have a chuckle though at the bemused faces of all the kids though at the very start of the play. Bless them, it must have been quite a site all of these adults looking at them with big grinning faces.

I know one thing though, I won’t be missing next year’s play - meeting or no bloody meeting!

Numb toes and fingers

December 11th, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Cycling

The weather finally appears to have caught on to the fact that it’s actually December hooray! The cold and crisp (but sunny) days are here and hopefully to stay for a while - this is what winter is about (well that and large dollops of snow of course).

With the weather being so good I simply couldn’t resist taking my bike for a spin around my Gowerton loop this lunchtime. The 14.06 mile route took me 57 minutes and 11 seconds at an average speed of 14.6 mph and a top speed of 21 mph. The only downside was that when I returned I could hardly feel my fingers and toes - now I know why the serious cyclists wear foot muffs! Still it was lush to be out and away from the office :)
